AI is changing medicine. Medical education must change, too

Artificial intelligence is reshaping how doctors work, and medical schools are struggling to keep pace. A growing number of physicians already rely on AI tools for daily tasks, from transcribing patient notes to reviewing the newest clinical research before making a diagnosis. The technology is no longer a distant possibility. It is embedded in exam rooms and hospital wards right now.

The problem is that medical education has not adjusted. Students still spend years memorizing facts that a machine can retrieve in seconds. Curricula rarely cover how to evaluate an AI recommendation, when to trust it, and when to override it. That gap leaves future doctors unprepared for the reality of modern practice.

Teaching hospitals and universities need to treat AI literacy as a core clinical skill, not an elective. That means training students to question algorithmic outputs, understand bias in training data, and communicate uncertainty to patients. It also means helping practicing physicians adapt without abandoning their judgment.

Patients deserve doctors who can combine human reasoning with machine speed. Getting there requires a serious overhaul of how medicine is taught, tested, and practiced. The tools are already here. The training is not.
