As Santa Rosa City Schools begins new year, teachers, parents brace for fallout of special education cuts

Santa Rosa City Schools opened its doors for the new academic year this week, but the mood at many campuses is tense. District administrators insist that the special education programs still standing after a series of deep, budget-driven cuts will be enough to serve the thousands of students who rely on them. Teachers and parents, however, are openly questioning that claim.

The cuts came after the district faced a significant shortfall, forcing officials to trim aides, consolidate classrooms, and reduce specialized therapy hours. In a statement, the superintendent said the remaining services are "right-sized" to meet legal requirements and student needs. But educators on the ground describe a different reality. Several report larger caseloads, fewer one-on-one supports, and longer waits for assessments.

Parents have started informal support groups to share information and push back. One mother, whose son has an individualized education plan, said she was told his new classroom will have two adults for twelve students, up from a ratio of one to six last year. She worries he will not get the attention he needs to avoid regression.

The district has promised to review the situation after the first month of school. But for many families, that review cannot come soon enough. They are bracing for a year of advocacy, paperwork, and difficult conversations, all while trying to make sure their children do not fall through the cracks.
