Growing up in Los Angeles, a city known for its vibrant Armenian community, I often found myself facing bewilderment when I identified as Armenian. Despite being in a county that hosts one of the largest Armenian diasporas globally, my experience at school was marked by isolation, as I was frequently one of the few Armenian students in my classes.
This disconnect was not limited to my peers; even educators appeared unsure about my cultural background. The lack of awareness about Armenian history and contributions often led to misconceptions and stereotypes. Conversations about my heritage were met with blank stares or awkward attempts to relate.
This experience highlights a significant gap in cultural education, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and understanding of diverse communities. It serves as a reminder that even in a multicultural city, there can be profound misunderstandings about identity, urging a call for more inclusive practices in schools and communities.
