Fred Lokoff, the Philadelphia-area businessman who turned a single store into the regional consumer electronics chain Bryn Mawr Stereo, died Sept. 21 at the age of 92.
Lokoff built his reputation in the retail audio and video market, expanding Bryn Mawr Stereo into a familiar name across the Philadelphia region. The chain became known for its selection of high-end equipment and for staff who could guide customers through the fast-changing world of home entertainment. At its peak, the business operated multiple locations and competed with larger national retailers while keeping a local identity.
After selling the company, Lokoff turned much of his attention to philanthropy. He and his family established an early childhood education foundation in memory of his daughter. The organization has supported preschool programs, teacher training, and efforts to improve access to quality learning for young children.
Those who knew Lokoff described him as a straightforward businessman who cared about the people around him. Former employees recalled a demanding but fair owner who expected hard work and rewarded loyalty. Community leaders noted that his giving often came without publicity.
Lokoff is survived by his family and a long list of friends and colleagues. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
