BARNEGAT – When students walked through the doors of the Robert L. Horbelt School, they didn’t just enter a classroom—they stepped into La Feria, a vibrant, interactive festival designed to make cultural learning an immersive experience. The event transformed the school into a lively marketplace of traditions, languages, and customs from around the world.
This reporter was not merely a spectator. Student body president Aspyn Spann, a sixth grader with an impressive command of the event’s layout and purpose, personally guided the tour. She knew exactly where each cultural station was located and enthusiastically explained the activities, from traditional crafts to language games. Her leadership highlighted how deeply the students had embraced the project.
La Feria featured colorful decorations, authentic music, and hands-on stations where children could sample foods, try on traditional clothing, and learn basic phrases in different languages. Teachers and parent volunteers worked alongside students to ensure every activity was both educational and engaging. The goal was to go beyond textbooks and allow children to experience culture through sight, sound, taste, and touch.
The event underscored the importance of global awareness at a young age. By participating in La Feria, students not only learned about diverse traditions but also developed respect and curiosity for cultures different from their own. For the children of Barnegat, cultural education was no longer an abstract concept—it was a celebration they could see, hear, and feel.
