A senior official at the Department of Education said the growing adoption of a federal school choice program will place increasing pressure on states led by Democrats to follow suit. The remarks came as more than half of U.S. states signed on to the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit, a program advanced under the Trump administration that allows taxpayers to direct funds toward private education expenses.
The official argued that families in states that decline to participate will begin asking why they are excluded from benefits their neighbors in other states can access. According to the official, that demand will build over time and force lawmakers in those states to reconsider their positions, even where teachers unions and other groups have opposed similar measures at the state level.
Supporters describe the credit as a way to give parents more control over where their children attend school, particularly in districts where public schools have struggled. Critics counter that the program diverts money away from public education and mainly helps families who already pay for private schooling.
The debate now shifts to state capitals, where legislatures will decide whether to align their tax codes with the federal program. Education policy groups on both sides say they expect the issue to feature prominently in upcoming legislative sessions and in campaign messaging ahead of the next election cycle.
