A recent study aimed to uncover health profession students' perceptions of ChatGPT and its potential integration into healthcare and educational settings. As artificial intelligence continues to gain traction in medical education and clinical training, the acceptance of tools like ChatGPT among students remains largely unexamined.
Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, researchers conducted a web-based survey from March to June 2023, gathering responses from 217 undergraduate students across various health disciplines, including nursing, medicine, and therapy fields. The findings revealed that an impressive 86.2% of participants were familiar with ChatGPT, with an overall positive perception reflected in a mean score of 4.04 out of 5.
Students highlighted ChatGPT's strengths in information retrieval and summarization, noting its potential to enhance learning experiences. However, qualitative responses also brought to light concerns regarding ethical implications, the risk of diminishing critical thinking skills, and challenges in information verification.
The study concluded that while ChatGPT offers numerous benefits, ongoing refinement is essential to ensure its accuracy and reliability in meeting the diverse needs of health profession education. These insights are crucial for shaping the future role of AI in both educational and clinical practice, emphasizing the need to balance the advantages of technology with ethical considerations.
