A Hamilton County parent is raising concerns about the district's exceptional education program, saying the school system should prioritize support for students and the teachers who work with them every day.
The parent spoke during a recent school board meeting, describing what they called gaps in the current model. According to the parent, students with disabilities often receive services that feel disconnected from their daily classroom experience. They argued that teachers need more training, smaller caseloads, and better access to specialists who can help them meet each student's needs.
The parent also questioned whether the district's approach places too much responsibility on general education teachers who may not have deep training in special education. They said those teachers are doing their best, but they cannot be expected to fill every role without proper resources.
District officials have not yet responded publicly to the specific complaints. The parent urged the board to review how special education services are delivered and to include families and educators in that conversation.
Advocates say similar concerns have surfaced in other districts, where staffing shortages and rising identification rates have strained special education programs. They argue that without meaningful investment, students who need the most support will continue to fall behind.
The parent plans to bring the issue back to the board at a future meeting and is asking other families to share their experiences.
