Suffolk County officials have issued a heat advisory that remains in effect through Friday, June 12 at 8 pm. The advisory is triggered when the combination of heat and humidity makes temperatures feel like 95 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit for two or more days in a row, or when the heat index hits 100 to 104 degrees for any period of time.
In response, all recess and physical education classes have been moved indoors for the duration of the advisory. School administrators confirmed that every school building is equipped with air conditioning, ensuring students and staff can stay cool while continuing their daily routines. The decision to hold activities inside is a precautionary measure aimed at preventing heat-related illness during the hottest parts of the day.
Officials emphasized that student and staff safety remains the top priority. Parents are encouraged to make sure children stay hydrated and dress appropriately for the warm weather. The advisory is expected to lift Friday evening, at which point outdoor activities may resume.
