A new nonprofit on the Vineyard is putting a fresh spin on outdoor education, trading a traditional classroom for the deck of a bluewater sailboat. The Wonder and Wander Collective, a 501(c)(3) organization, has launched a nature-based program built around a simple idea: children learn best when the world itself is the classroom.
The program centers on Life Goes On, a 54-foot Robert Perry-designed ketch donated to the group in 2025. The vessel was sailed up to the Vineyard from its previous location, and it now serves as the floating hub for the collective's immersive lessons. Instead of worksheets and whiteboards, students will study marine biology, navigation, and ecology while underway, learning about wind patterns, tides, and local wildlife firsthand.
Founders say the goal is to foster curiosity and stewardship through direct experience. The ketch allows the group to explore coastal waters, anchor in quiet harbors, and turn every trip into a living lesson. The collective is currently enrolling families and planning a series of short voyages for the coming season. Organizers hope the program will grow into a year-round option, giving more children the chance to learn on the water.
