Maryland Lawmaker Calls for Review of Education Plan After Goals Missed

A Maryland state senator who backed the Blueprint for Maryland's Future is now asking for a closer look at the sweeping education law after new data showed students falling short of key academic targets.

State Sen. Joanne Benson said the results raise serious questions about whether the extra money flowing into schools is producing the results families were promised. The Blueprint, a multi-billion dollar initiative, was designed to expand early childhood programs, boost teacher pay, and direct more resources to struggling schools.

But recent performance measures show reading and math scores still lagging, with some districts trailing well behind state benchmarks. Benson said the gap between spending and outcomes cannot be ignored.

"We need to know what is working and what is not," she said, adding that lawmakers owe it to students and taxpayers to examine the program honestly.

Supporters of the law argue that major reforms take time and that many changes, including expanded pre-K and tutoring, are still being rolled out. They point out that the funding increases are phased in over several years.

Critics counter that the state has already committed billions without clear evidence of improvement. Benson said she wants a formal review to identify delays, administrative problems, and any parts of the plan that may need adjustment.

The request comes as lawmakers prepare for the next budget session, where education spending is expected to remain a central issue.
