Educational challenges in rural Punjab are intricately linked to gender disparities, highlighting a broader issue within the province. Many girls in these areas face significant obstacles to accessing quality education, including socio-cultural norms that prioritize early marriage over schooling. Families often prioritize boys' education, viewing it as a more valuable investment, which perpetuates the cycle of inequality.
In addition to cultural barriers, infrastructure deficits further complicate the educational landscape. Many rural schools lack basic facilities, trained teachers, and resources, making it difficult for all students, particularly girls, to thrive academically. The long distances to schools can also pose safety concerns, discouraging families from sending their daughters to school.
Moreover, the lack of female teachers in rural areas can hinder girls' enrollment and retention, as parents may feel more comfortable sending their daughters to schools where they can learn from women. Addressing these intertwined issues requires targeted interventions that not only improve educational access but also empower girls and challenge existing gender norms in rural Punjab.
