Oklahoma Voice: Oklahoma State Department of Education requests $4.4 billion budget

Oklahoma City - The Oklahoma State Department of Education has submitted a budget request of $4.4 billion for the upcoming fiscal year, citing a new literacy law and rising insurance costs as key drivers behind the proposal. The request includes $123.3 million in additional funding compared to the current budget.

Officials said the new literacy initiative requires significant investment to help students improve reading skills across the state. The program aims to provide resources, training, and support for teachers and schools as they work to raise literacy rates among Oklahoma children.

Rising insurance premiums also played a major role in the funding request. School districts across the state have seen sharp increases in property and liability insurance costs, putting additional pressure on already tight budgets. The department said the extra funds would help offset these expenses and ensure schools can continue operating without cutting essential services.

The budget proposal will now go before lawmakers for review during the next legislative session. Education leaders said they hope the request will receive serious consideration, noting that the additional funding is necessary to meet the growing needs of students and schools.

Critics of the request have raised questions about how the money would be spent and whether the department can demonstrate measurable results. Supporters argue that investing in literacy and covering basic operational costs is essential for the long-term success of Oklahoma's education system.

The department said it looks forward to working with the legislature to finalize the budget and address the challenges facing schools statewide.
