Rethinking AI's Role in the College Classroom

Rethinking AI's Role in the College Classroom

The conversation around artificial intelligence in higher education often swings between fear and hype. But a more grounded approach is emerging, one that positions AI not as a replacement for teaching, but as a powerful tool for deepening student learning. The key is focusing on areas where AI excels: providing immediate feedback, prompting self-reflection, and supporting formative assessment.

Instead of asking how to police AI use, educators are now asking how to integrate it into the pedagogy itself. For example, AI can act as a Socratic partner, asking students probing questions about their own arguments before they submit a paper. This pushes students to think critically about their reasoning, a core component of metacognition. Similarly, AI can generate multiple versions of a case study or problem set, allowing students to practice applying concepts until they achieve mastery, with the AI offering instant, low-stakes feedback that identifies gaps in understanding without the pressure of a grade.

This shifts the instructor's role from being the sole evaluator to a facilitator of learning. The human element remains central: the instructor curates the AI prompts, interprets the student responses, and provides the nuanced, empathetic guidance that technology cannot. By using AI for the repetitive parts of assessment, such as checking for basic comprehension, faculty free up valuable time for meaningful, one-on-one interactions. The goal is not to automate education, but to use AI to make the learning process more iterative, transparent, and ultimately, more human.
