After a widespread closure on Monday due to hazardous winter conditions, several school districts in the Baton Rouge area are resuming classes today. The decision comes as freezing temperatures and the lingering threat of icy patches persist across the region.
East Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools, the area's largest district, is among those reopening its doors. District officials stated that road conditions had improved sufficiently to allow for safe transportation, though they urged families to exercise continued caution during the morning commute. Buses may run delayed routes as drivers navigate any remaining trouble spots.
Other parishes and private institutions followed similar protocols, assessing roadways early Tuesday before confirming their reopenings. The closures on Monday were a preventative measure against freezing rain that created slick conditions on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.
Authorities continue to advise motorists to be aware of potential black ice, especially in shaded areas. While the immediate precipitation has passed, the prolonged freeze has slowed the complete melting process, leading to a cautious and staggered return to normal schedules for students and staff across the capital region.
