A major new initiative to celebrate the pillars of South Carolina's education system has been unveiled. The State Department of Education, in partnership with the state Chamber of Commerce, has significantly expanded its annual awards program, now rebranded as the Champions in Learning awards.
This collaborative effort broadens the scope of recognition far beyond the classroom. While exceptional teachers remain at the heart of the program, the awards will now also honor dedicated school staff, from bus drivers and cafeteria workers to counselors and administrative personnel. Furthermore, the program will formally recognize crucial education partners, including local businesses, non-profit organizations, and community volunteers who provide vital support to schools.
Officials state that the expansion underscores a fundamental belief that educating the state's future workforce is a shared responsibility. By highlighting these diverse contributions, the program aims to foster greater community engagement and showcase the collective effort required for student success.
The inaugural, expanded Champions in Learning awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Charleston later this year. Nominations for the awards are expected to open to the public in the coming months, inviting communities across the state to put forward their local heroes for consideration.
