U.S. Dept of Education Broadens School Sex Abuse Probe, Cites The 74’s Reporting

The United States Department of Education has widened its investigation into how public school districts manage allegations of sexual misconduct by staff members against students. The department's Office for Civil Rights confirmed it is now examining multiple districts, pointing to recent reporting that brought new attention to the issue.

The probe focuses on whether schools properly responded to complaints, followed federal guidelines, and protected students from known risks. According to the department, the reporting revealed patterns of delayed action, incomplete record keeping, and failures to notify authorities in a timely manner.

Officials stated that the expanded review will look at several cases across different states, with investigators requesting internal documents, complaint logs, and communication records. The Office for Civil Rights has the authority to enforce Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs.

Advocates for student safety welcomed the broader inquiry, saying it sends a clear message that schools cannot ignore or quietly settle abuse claims. Some district leaders, however, raised concerns about the scope of the investigation and the resources needed to comply with federal requests.

The department has not set a timeline for releasing findings. If violations are confirmed, districts could face penalties, including loss of federal funding or mandated corrective action plans. The investigation remains ongoing.
