Washington state's public education system has dropped again in a national assessment, even as the state saw gains in overall child well-being. The latest report from a child-focused research group shows Washington now ranks 29th in education, down from 26th last year and a significant fall from its 12th place position a decade ago. The ranking is based on factors like preschool enrollment, fourth-grade reading scores, eighth-grade math proficiency, and high school graduation rates.
The decline comes despite Washington's improvement in broader child well-being metrics, where it climbed to 11th overall. The report highlights persistent challenges in educational equity and outcomes. For instance, while the state's graduation rate has risen, gaps remain between different student groups. Fourth-grade reading scores have also slipped, and eighth-grade math scores have not recovered to pre-pandemic levels.
Education advocates point to underfunding and teacher shortages as key drivers of the slide. Washington's per-pupil spending, while above the national average, has not kept pace with rising costs in the region. The state also struggles to attract and retain qualified educators, particularly in rural and high-poverty districts. Lawmakers have debated new funding formulas and early learning investments, but the report suggests those efforts have yet to reverse the trend. Without targeted action, experts warn the state risks falling further behind as other regions invest more aggressively in school improvement.
