Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a new directive that makes specialized training in the "science of reading" mandatory for all elementary school teachers across the state. The move comes after years of disappointing test scores, with recent data showing that more than half of Michigan's third graders are not reading at grade level.

The science of reading is a body of research that focuses on how the brain learns to read. It emphasizes explicit, systematic instruction in phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension, moving away from the "three-cueing" method that encourages students to guess words based on context or pictures. Under the new requirement, teachers will need to complete a state-approved training program to earn or renew their teaching certificates.

Education officials argue that this shift is essential to closing the achievement gap and ensuring all children have the foundational skills for future learning. The mandate applies to current teachers as well as new educators entering the field. While some teachers have expressed concern about the time and cost of the additional training, supporters say the change is long overdue and will give educators the proven tools they need to help struggling readers succeed.
