CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia Board of Education reviewed the ongoing state intervention in Tyler County Schools during its latest meeting, while also opening a new rule on student-athlete transfers for public comment. Board members additionally gave State Superintendent Michele Blatt a strong performance evaluation for the fifth consecutive year.
The update on Tyler County focused on progress made since the state stepped in to address operational and academic issues. Officials reported that local administrators are working with state support to stabilize the district, though specific benchmarks for returning control to local governance were not immediately detailed.
In a separate action, the board advanced a proposed policy change regarding athletic eligibility for students who transfer between schools. The rule, now open for public feedback, aims to clarify the conditions under which student-athletes can compete immediately after changing schools. The measure is intended to curb recruitment concerns while allowing legitimate moves for family or academic reasons.
Following the policy discussions, the board conducted its annual evaluation of Superintendent Blatt. Members praised her leadership during a period of statewide educational reforms and recovery efforts. The review, which highlighted her management of the department and communication with local districts, resulted in a positive rating for the fifth year in a row. No specific salary adjustments or contract changes were announced in connection with the evaluation.
