A Mother Credits Texas Education Savings Accounts for Her Son's Reading Progress

A licensed therapist and mother in Texas is sharing how the state's education savings account program changed her son's experience with school. In her account, the program gave her family the ability to find an environment that finally worked for a child who had struggled to read.

Her son had fallen behind early and lost confidence in traditional classroom settings. Teachers were doing what they could, but large classes and a fixed curriculum left little room for the focused, repetitive instruction he needed. The family felt stuck between watching him fall further behind and paying for private help out of pocket.

The education savings account, part of what the state calls Education Freedom Accounts, gave them a third option. The funds covered tuition at a smaller school with specialized reading instruction, along with materials and tutoring that reinforced what he learned during the day. Within a year, the mother says, her son went from avoiding books to reading aloud at home without being asked.

She describes the change as more than academic. His anxiety eased, he began talking about school with enthusiasm, and he started to see himself as capable rather than behind. As a therapist, she notes that early reading failure often carries emotional weight that follows children for years, and that catching it early can reshape how a child views learning.

Her message to lawmakers is simple: the program is not an abstraction. For her family, it was the difference between a child who dreaded school and one who now reads for pleasure. She urges continued support so other parents can make the same choice.
