A $1 million donation from technology executive Sanjay Srivastava and his wife Charlene will support research at the University of California San Diego into emerging artificial intelligence technologies aimed at creating more effective, accessible and personalized educational experiences.
The gift underscores a growing interest among technology leaders in shaping how AI tools are developed and deployed in classrooms and learning environments. Supporters of such research argue that AI has the potential to tailor instruction to individual students, identify learning gaps earlier and expand access to high quality educational resources for communities that have historically lacked them.
The funding arrives as universities and school systems across the country grapple with how to integrate AI responsibly. Questions around data privacy, algorithmic bias and the role of teachers remain central to the debate, and researchers say sustained investment is needed to study both the promise and the risks of the technology.
University officials said the donation will help accelerate work already underway on adaptive learning systems and other AI driven tools. The Srivastavas, who have a background in the technology sector, said they hope the gift encourages further collaboration between researchers, educators and industry to ensure new tools are grounded in real classroom needs.
