Two new initiatives from Goodwill Industries of Central Florida are giving both employees and local students fresh ways to earn degrees and build careers. The programs, called Project Compass and Goodwill Scholars, aim to remove common barriers like cost, time, and lack of support that often stop people from continuing their education.
Project Compass focuses on working adults who want to go back to school but cannot fit traditional classes into their schedules. It offers flexible online courses, one-on-one academic coaching, and help with tuition payments. Participants can choose from certificate programs in fields like healthcare, information technology, and logistics, which are all areas with strong local job demand. The program also connects students with employers who are ready to hire upon completion.
Goodwill Scholars, on the other hand, is designed for high school students and recent graduates. It provides mentorship, college application assistance, and scholarships that cover not just tuition but also books and transportation. Local educators say the program has been especially helpful for first-generation college students who may not have family members with experience navigating the admissions process.
Both programs are part of Goodwill's broader mission to strengthen the workforce in Central Florida. Officials note that the region has seen steady growth in industries that require technical training but not necessarily a four-year degree. By offering these alternative paths, Goodwill hopes to fill those jobs with local talent while helping individuals gain financial independence.
Since launching earlier this year, the two programs have already enrolled more than 200 participants. Organizers expect that number to grow as word spreads through community centers, schools, and Goodwill's own retail locations. Applications for the next cohort are now open, with no prior work or education experience required to apply.
