House Democrats call for special session to address public education funding crisis

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - House Democrats on Thursday held a press conference addressing what they described as a public school funding crisis, citing recent warnings from the West Virginia Board of Education. Lawmakers called on Republican leadership to convene a special legislative session immediately, arguing that the state's education system is on the verge of collapse.

During the event, Democratic leaders pointed to a letter from the state Board of Education that flagged severe budget shortfalls, staffing shortages, and crumbling infrastructure in many districts. They said the situation has worsened since the last regular session ended without a long-term funding solution.

"We are not talking about a hypothetical problem," said one representative. "Our schools are running out of money to pay teachers, buy supplies, and keep buildings open. The board has made it clear that we are in a crisis, and the majority party is ignoring it."

Democrats proposed a series of measures, including increasing the state's share of education funding, closing tax loopholes for corporations, and using surplus revenue to stabilize school budgets. They argued that without immediate action, more counties could face the possibility of school closures or four-day school weeks.

Republican leaders have not yet responded to the call for a special session. Some have previously argued that the state's budget is already strained and that additional education spending would require cuts elsewhere. Democrats countered that failing to invest now will cost far more in the long run.

"We cannot wait until the next regular session in January," another lawmaker said. "Children are in classrooms right now, and they are being shortchanged every single day."
