Iowa City school board member Jayne Finch has resigned, and in her farewell letter she pointed to a fellow board member's treatment of a state budget review committee as the breaking point. Finch, who served on the board for several years, submitted her resignation on Friday, saying the "last straw" came when another member dismissed the work of that committee.
Finch's letter did not name the colleague directly, but she described a pattern of "flouting" the committee's purpose and process. She wrote that the committee exists to provide oversight and transparency, and that ignoring its recommendations undermines public trust. The resignation takes effect immediately, leaving a vacancy on the seven-member board.
Board president Ruthina Malone acknowledged Finch's service in a brief statement, thanking her for her dedication to students and families. Malone said the board will begin the process of appointing a replacement within the next 30 days, per state law. Finch's departure adds to a turbulent period for the district, which has faced budget shortfalls and contentious debates over school closures.
In her letter, Finch urged remaining members to take the budget review process seriously, warning that dismissing it could lead to deeper financial problems. She also thanked district staff and parents for their engagement, saying she leaves with gratitude despite her frustration. The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, where the resignation is expected to be formally accepted.
