Tampa, FL - Gubernatorial candidate Jay Collins laid out his education platform during a stop in Tampa on Wednesday, emphasizing a shift toward workforce readiness and alternative postsecondary options. Speaking to a crowd of local business leaders and educators, Collins argued that Florida's current system places too much emphasis on traditional four-year college degrees, leaving many students unprepared for high-demand trades and technical careers.
"We need to broaden the definition of success," Collins said. "Not every student needs a bachelor's degree to thrive. We should be building bridges to apprenticeships, vocational training, and industry certifications."
His proposal includes expanding funding for career and technical education programs in public high schools, creating tax incentives for companies that partner with schools to offer on-the-job training, and establishing a state-level task force to align curriculum with local labor market needs. Collins also called for streamlining the process for students to earn college credit through dual enrollment in technical fields.
The candidate did not provide a specific price tag for the plan but said it would be funded by reallocating existing education dollars and seeking private-sector partnerships. He criticized the current administration for what he called a "one-size-fits-all approach" to education, promising instead to give school districts more flexibility to design programs that match their regional economies.
Collins faces a crowded Republican primary field. His focus on workforce options is seen as an effort to appeal to both conservative voters who favor school choice and business owners struggling to fill skilled labor positions.
