Missouri Education Board Seeks $270 Million Below State Funding Formula

Missouri Education Board Seeks $270 Million Below State Funding Formula

The Missouri State Board of Education has approved a budget request for the upcoming fiscal year that falls $270 million short of what the state's own school funding formula calls for. The decision highlights ongoing tension between the formula's calculated needs and the money lawmakers are willing to commit.

The foundation formula is designed to determine how much each district needs to provide a basic education. Under the current calculation, full funding would require a significant increase over what the board is requesting. Instead, the board settled on a figure that keeps spending closer to recent levels.

Board members acknowledged the gap but pointed to tight state revenues and competing demands. Some said asking for the full amount would be unrealistic given the legislature's recent spending patterns. Others warned that districts will continue to absorb shortfalls, forcing cuts to staff, transportation and classroom resources.

Education advocates argue the formula has not been fully funded in years, leaving many schools to operate with less than the state standard. Rural districts and those with declining enrollment say the shortfall hits hardest when fixed costs stay the same.

The request now goes to the governor, who will build a budget proposal before lawmakers take it up in the next session. Final decisions rest with the legislature, where leaders have already signaled caution about new spending. The outcome will shape school budgets across Missouri for the year ahead.
