Missouri's top education official, Commissioner of Education Karla Eslinger, has announced her retirement effective at the end of this month, ending a tenure that lasted just two years. Eslinger, who took the helm of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in 2023, cited personal reasons for her departure in a statement released by the state board.
Her time in the role was marked by significant challenges, including ongoing debates over school funding formulas, teacher shortages, and the implementation of new literacy standards. Eslinger previously served as a state senator and as an educator in rural Missouri, bringing a legislative and classroom background to the commissioner's office. The State Board of Education will now begin the search for an interim replacement while it considers a permanent successor.
The announcement comes as districts across Missouri prepare for the start of the next academic year. Board members expressed gratitude for Eslinger's service, noting her focus on early childhood education and workforce readiness. The search for a new commissioner is expected to draw interest from both within the state and nationally, as Missouri navigates shifting educational policies and post-pandemic recovery efforts.
