Oklahoma Candidates Clash Over Taxes, Schools, and Immigration in Lone Debate

Republican Mike Mazzei and Democrat Cyndi Munson faced off in their only scheduled debate before the November election, trading sharply different visions on taxes, education, and immigration.

Mazzei, a former state senator, argued that cutting income taxes would spur growth and keep money in the pockets of working families. He said the state should shrink spending rather than expand programs, and he tied lower taxes to attracting businesses that have bypassed Oklahoma in recent years.

Munson, a state representative, pushed back. She said repeated tax cuts have starved public schools and left rural districts without enough teachers or classroom resources. She called for targeted investment in education and warned that further reductions would shift the burden onto local property owners.

The two also split on immigration. Mazzei said the state should cooperate more closely with federal enforcement and tighten requirements for employers who hire undocumented workers. Munson said the focus should be on legal pathways and on protecting families who have lived and worked in Oklahoma for years.

The debate offered voters a clear choice on fiscal policy and social priorities. With ballots set to go out in the coming weeks, both campaigns said they would keep pressing their messages across the state.
