Oklahoma Superintendent Race Centers on Rebuilding Schools

Oklahoma Superintendent Race Centers on Rebuilding Schools

Voters are just days away from decisions that will shape Oklahoma's classrooms for years to come. The race for state superintendent pits Republican Robert Franklin against Democrat Jennettie Marshall, and both candidates say rebuilding the state's education system is their top priority.

Franklin has focused his campaign on restoring what he calls a back to basics approach, arguing that stronger reading and math instruction should come before anything else. He has said the state needs to cut administrative overhead and push more resources directly into classrooms, and he wants to expand alternative certification paths to address teacher shortages in rural districts.

Marshall has centered her message on investment and trust. She argues that years of flat funding and political interference have driven educators out of the profession, and she wants to see raises for support staff, expanded early childhood programs, and a funding formula that accounts for the real costs schools face. She has also promised to give teachers a stronger voice in policy decisions that affect their daily work.

Both candidates agree on one point: the status quo is not working. Turnout is expected to be significant, and the outcome will determine who leads the agency responsible for overseeing roughly 700 school districts across the state.
