Santa Fe Public Schools is working to address a sharp rise in teacher vacancies after the number of open positions nearly doubled over the past year. District officials say the increase has left schools scrambling to cover classrooms, with some students starting the year without a permanent teacher.
The shortage spans multiple grade levels and subject areas, though special education and bilingual education positions have been especially difficult to fill. Administrators point to a combination of factors, including retirements, resignations, and a limited pool of qualified applicants. Housing costs in the region and competition from neighboring districts have also made recruitment more challenging.
To keep classrooms staffed, the district has relied on substitute teachers and long-term substitutes, and in some cases has combined classes or shifted licensed staff into different roles. Officials acknowledge these are temporary fixes that do not replace the stability a full-time teacher provides.
District leaders say they are exploring several options, including higher pay, signing bonuses, and expanded partnerships with local colleges to build a pipeline of new teachers. They also plan to increase support for new hires in hopes of improving retention.
Parents and community members have raised concerns about the impact on student learning, particularly in schools with the highest vacancy rates. The district says it will continue to post updates on hiring progress and is urging qualified candidates to apply.
