The State Board of Education has given its approval to an updated internal audit charter, but not before several members raised concerns about how the new language fits within the current chain of command. The revised document clarifies the relationship between the State Superintendent, the Board of Education, and the audit function.
During the discussion prior to the vote, board members pointed out that the wording appeared to shift oversight responsibilities in a way that could blur lines of authority. Some questioned whether the changes would give the State Superintendent too much control over the audit process, potentially undermining the board's independent oversight role. Others argued that the revisions simply reflect the existing management structure and bring the charter in line with standard practices.
The charter outlines the purpose, authority, and responsibilities of the internal audit unit. It also defines how the audit team reports findings and who has the final say on implementing recommendations. Supporters of the update said it modernizes the document and removes outdated references that no longer match how the agency operates.
The board ultimately approved the charter after a brief debate. Officials said the new version will take effect immediately and guide audit work for the coming fiscal year. No further changes are expected unless the board revisits the issue during a future review cycle.
