Why Social Studies Is Essential

Why Social Studies Is Essential

In September, I was genuinely excited to attend my son's elementary school Back-to-School Night. As a former high school social studies teacher and now a nonprofit executive working to strengthen K-12 education nationally, I love being in schools. I love seeing classrooms come to life, talking with teachers, and getting a firsthand look at what my child is learning.

That evening, I walked through the halls and visited each classroom. The walls were covered with student work, colorful charts, and encouraging posters. But something stood out to me. In several classrooms, social studies was barely visible. Reading and math dominated the schedules. Science had a dedicated corner. Social studies, if present at all, was squeezed into a small slot at the end of the day.

This worried me. Social studies teaches students how government works, how to evaluate evidence, and how to understand different perspectives. It helps them make sense of current events and their own communities. When schools push social studies aside, students miss out on critical thinking skills that matter in every part of life.

Parents and educators should pay attention. A strong education includes history, civics, geography, and economics. These subjects are not extras. They are essential.
