CHICAGO -- A measure designed to shield Illinois servicemembers and their families from disruptions in higher education has cleared the state legislature and is now awaiting action from Governor JB Pritzker. The bill, which passed the House with bipartisan support, aims to remove bureaucratic hurdles that often penalize military students when they are forced to relocate due to deployment or permanent change of station orders.
Under the proposed law, public colleges and universities in Illinois would be required to adopt more flexible policies for active-duty students and their dependents. This includes ensuring that service members do not lose academic credits or face re-enrollment fees when they must leave school mid-semester. The legislation also mandates that institutions provide priority registration for military-affiliated students, helping them secure seats in required courses before they fill up.
Supporters of the bill argue that military families already sacrifice enough without worrying about their education falling apart due to a sudden move. The measure builds on existing federal protections under the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act, but closes gaps specific to Illinois state schools. If signed into law, the changes would take effect immediately, offering relief to thousands of active-duty personnel, reservists, and National Guard members stationed in the state. Governor Pritzker has not yet indicated whether he will sign the bill, but similar measures have received his support in the past.
